One aspect of our organization is support for mental health and suicide awareness and prevention. As a veterinary medical student myself, another organization I stand with is NOMV. What is NOMV? The letters stand for Not One More Vet. What does that mean? There is increasing awareness of the mental health and suicide epidemic in veterinary medicine. Veterinarians and veterinary staff have one fo the highest suicide rates of all occupations. The organization is dedicated to changing the mentality starting from veterinary School and continuing beyond to prevent the tragedies we see every day in the profession. Please visit their website https://www.nomv.org/faqs/ to learn more about how they started, the progress they've made, and what they're doing to change the future.
You might be wondering, "I'm not in the veterinary field, why does this matter to me?" For many reasons. For one, here at EmBark we promote animals as a part of a therapy program for people that have trauma, and we also fully support the health, wellbeing, and happiness of those animals as well - you need veterinary staff to help you with this. For another, this epidemic might be higher statistically in this particular profession, but suicide is prevalent in all professions, of all people. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death for young people. We have to be allies for all people. We are proud to support NOMV and all other suicide prevention and mental health and wellbeing organizations.
NOMV includes a diverse array of resources, some for veterinary staff, and some for all people: https://www.nomv.org/crisis-numbers/
